SpongeBob SquarePants Battle For Bikini Bottom Rehydrated Gameplay

The technical redesign is followed by some creative enhancements, but a few positive spots aren’t enough to carry the passable but repetitive and collectathon-heavy gameplay Battle for Bikini Bottom to the level you might expect from a platformer published in 2020 – especially with remakes like the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy and Spyro Reignited Trilogy showing how a revival like this should be done.

THQ Nordic’s 2020 take on the Nickelodeon platformer of 2003 begins strong. Portraying SpongeBob, Patrick, and Sandy, players roam through classic SpongeBob scenes solving puzzles, gathering golden spatula, and fighting a legion of evil robots brought on by the ever-exhausting Plankton.

The graphics are a major step up from their early-aughts beginnings, appearing to be more vivid, more colourful, and more informative. You’ll be taking your adventures to Goo Lagoon, Jellyfish Fields, Rock Bottom, Mermalair and more. You receive tasks along the way from Mr Krabs, Squidward, Gary and a wide array of other recognizable residents of Bikini Bottom.

Due to credit, Rehydrated version runs cleanly on PlayStation 4 Pro, the bubbly re-mastered soundtrack is truly an earworm, and the actual feeling of running, jumping and bubbling as SpongeBob is precise and responsive.

Yet it’s mainly the adventure around those elements that, while undeniably fun and enjoyable because of how it takes advantage of the SpongeBob trademark only a few years after its release, remains as constrained in scale, style, and general thoughtfulness as it did on the original Xbox several years back. Worse, it now comes with the added context that almost two decades worth of amazing 3D platformers had been so thoroughly outperformed.

It’s truly an interactive VIP tour of your favourite early-series memories for longstanding SpongeBob fans, right down to the original voice acting. Helping Larry fix his television antenna? Great. Helping Mrs Puff find 11 (???) steering wheels? A joy to see. Going toe-to-tentacle himself with King Jellyfish? An honour to you! Giggling at lines I’d forgotten and delighting come to life in this world of television, I enjoyed every moment of the nautical nonsense of Rehydrated — right up until it began to feel like a repeating job.

Battle for Bikini Bottom Rehydrated has two major problems which prevent it from being properly experienced.

Firstly, while innovative, the mechanics lack the versatility and accuracy required to make platforming enjoyable. Sure, you can swing with Sandy’s lasso, hit targets with the endless supply of watermelons from Patrick, and tackle all sorts of tasks with SpongeBob’s pretty useful bubble wand. Sadly, flipping between characters is as awkward as ever (you still need those phone pole/portal items that seem to be appearing with little gameplay logic) and reaching dead ends when you’re deploying the wrong avatar is frustratingly normal.

Worse still, certain variations of moves tend to overwhelm the technical resources of the game. When Sandy abruptly froze high in the air, I was forced to restart the entire program, and faced similar gaps when approaching the edges of the arena with SpongeBob.

Spontaneously getting trapped inside walls became a frequent phase in my collect-a-thon underwater, an irritating fact which made exploring far more overwhelming. Even when I thought it was the right move to take a leap of faith towards a certain platform, it was maddening the possibility that I might lose all my progress by accidentally getting out of the gameplay bounds.

Second, the narrative design of the game, which relies heavily on the use of teleporting via “taxi” from objective to objective, is a chunky exercise in finding ways I just don’t enjoy like I once did. It’s one thing to be met with an open map to discover, but an aimless effort to locate a mission that you’ve acquired all the skills to accomplish is another. I had to turn to 2003 walkthroughs more than once to figure out that I was trying an extraction of a golden spatula intended to come later in the story.

Of course, I don’t want to completely restructure the game, but a resource that clarifies which destinations you are endeavoring to execute would go a long way — color coding, labeling, random hints, anything.

Playing SpongeBob SquarePants Battle For Bikini Bottom Rehydrated in 2020 feels like a ridiculous roller coaster experience with love and hate platforming. Overall it’s an extremely simple platformer, tossing in just a few genuinely difficult pieces.

Rather than discussing any of the real concerns that might have been changed with Battle for Bikini Bottom without sacrificing the essence of the original, it keeps history intact at the expense of making this a better game – and its problems have only become more apparent with age and increased competition. And we all can learn from this game that if you want to re-make something beloved, it’s not worth taking any half-measures.
